After an especially mild Autumn, June has started with a familiar cold and wet wintery burst. Many of the botanicals that go into my skincare have retreated to soil roots and rhizomes waiting on Spring while others, like lavender, are content with a haircut, to wait out the winter above ground. They are sure to enjoy some newfound morning sun after we dropped a row of overgrown pittosporums at the rear of our garden. Seeds have been gathered from annuals such as chamomile and calendula and will be resown to rejoin the riot of growth in September. Our summer root harvest of kumara, parsnip, yacon, yams and carrots, combined with hearty winter greens, make nourishing comfort food on these colder days.
Markets have remained steady throughout the North Island despite challenging national and international conditions. I was very pleased to add Whangarei to my market programme, although it is quite a drive from Napier! Its wonderful meeting new people and catching up with others who understand the importance of ethical self care. I continue to be busy when not at markets, making products and supplying website orders and very much appreciate the support!
I will be away from mid July to early Aug visiting my elderly mother so please let me know if you need anything before this, otherwise, I will be happy to hear from you when I return.
Stay warm, happy and healthy.
